Existing structures
Nuttall Engineering brings global expertise to the area of understanding existing structures. We appreciate that design codes are guidance based on idealised theory that when applied to a new structures provide an ideal solution. Many existing structures are live load tested daily and might have seen the worst case loading over their lifetimes, but all work in accordance with basic engineering principals.

INSPECTION AND ASSESSMENT
Nuttall Engineering’s core business is the inspection and assessment of structures. We undertake level one, two, three and engineering inspections as well as non-destructive testing. Our focus is on applying our experience to optimise the theoretical life and capacity of each structure utilising proven but innovative theory to achieve results as close to reality as is feasible.

An assessment can highlight under strength elements in a structure. Nuttall Engineering utilises its experience at Principal and Senior level engineers to make recommendations on any further works required. We understand the costing, timing, benefits and restrictions of consulting and construction works and make recommendations based on the most efficient solutions. This can range from recommending replacement or strengthening of elements or entire structures to completion of further assessment work that could prove a higher theoretical capacity.
REMEDIAL WORKS
Nuttall Engineering brings its expertise in constructability, construction costing and remedial works design to provide the most efficient remedial solution for understrength structures. Nuttall Engineering’s structural engineers can provide whole of life cost estimates to assist Clients in the decision to replace defected elements, refurbish entire structures or perform further assessment and high level analysis to optimise the theoretical strength and life of existing structures.
Further assessment work by our structural engineers involves the use of basic principles to finite element modelling with an aim to optimise the structures theoretical strength through the application of Australian and global standards, proven research and testing.
Nuttall Engineering appreciate that sometimes the replacement of elements on a structure can work out to be more cost effective with a better long term solution than performing further analysis.
New Structures
Our structural engineers have delivered detailed designs of small span structures to significant bridges up to 1.25km in length with complex construction methodologies as well as other structures such as buildings, retaining walls, overheads and culverts. Our experiences also include feasibility studies and concept designs for minor and major infrastructure projects including multi-billion dollar projects around Australia.

DESIGN
Nuttall Engineering’s structural engineers bring experience at Principal, Senior and Engineer levels to deliver a broad spectrum of structural design projects. We have extensive experience in the design of steel, concrete and steel-concrete composite structures. Our Structural engineers have worked on site and closely with fabricators and contractors, developing complex construction methodologies to suit the drivers of each individual project.
The structural engineers at Nuttall Engineering have worked on small projects to the major transport infrastructure projects across Australia and delivered at all levels of design and on site.
CONSTRUCTABILITY
At Nuttall Engineering we have detailed construction knowledge that we apply intrinsically to our design work. We also undertake constructability reviews at 25% and 75% which we find provides the early input required to facilitate ease of construction. Our structural engineers understand that the deliverable must provide the most constructible solution and that often the design parameters do not govern our design solution, the construction parameters do. Our depth of experience ensures the final design incorporates efficiency in cost, time and certainty of delivery for the Client.

Nuttall Engineering appreciates that problem solving can take many forms and must balance cost and effectiveness with whole life analysis and immediate project demands. Our experienced engineers are competent users of finite element software and understand its correct application. Designs can be made significantly more efficient by the application of finite element analysis.

Our engineers have a broad base of site experience in construction, construction management and construction supervision activities and can add value to projects throughout the construction phase. As the designer we can make decisions on site as to the suitability of proposed changes, reducing the risks involved in design changes and negligible down time waiting for approvals.
The Nuttall Engineering design phase includes safety in design reviews and maintains a focus on the safety of the construction team, the user, the maintainer and ultimately in demolition.
